Gianluca Scamacca is a striker playing for Serie A club Genoa, on loan from Sassuolo. Scamacca is 22 years old with his entire career still ahead of him and is bound to get a move to a bigger club. He has already caught the eye of big clubs like Juventus and AC Milan with his performances.

Some hail Scamacca as “the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic” not because of their matching heights (1.95m) or acrobatic strikes but because of their tactically similar playing styles.

Gianluca Scamacca best operates with a striker partner to link up with. Genoa have often played a 3-5-2 formation where Scamacca has a partner up top.

One of Scamacca’s biggest strengths is dropping deeper to lay off passes to runners around him (usually his striker partner). In the following clip, Scamacca’s teammate makes a run and Scamacca hits the floating ball with a perfect one touch technique.

Scamacca is not limited to playing with a striker partner. The runners in a team can be playing in any position. Could be a winger, a wing back, or even a midfielder like Frattesi in this clip.

Even in a striker partnership Scamacca does not possess a specific role. Despite often dropping deep and creating chances for his striker, he also runs the channels when his partner drops deeper.

Scamacca’s back-to-goal game is top notch when linking up with teammates. He also uses his athleticism to pin back defenders and sometimes get a shot on goal.

There is no doubt about Gianluca Scamacca’s ability and talent. This season, in the u-21 European Championship Qualification and Coppa Italia, Scamacca has consistently put the ball into the back of the net with 7 goals in 6 games. However, if the youngster is to get a move to Juventus or AC Milan he must step up in front of goal. Just 2 goals in 8 starts in the Serie A had put Scamacca behind Shomurodov and Destro in Genoa’s pecking order. His only shot at reclaiming his position in the starting XI will be with some goals off the bench.
